Certification to Teach Blended and Online Courses in Canvas
Our accreditation stipulates that all faculty must undergo proper training prior to teaching their first blended or online course at APU. To that end, ITT offers two different certifications: 1) Teaching Online (two parts) and 2) Teaching Blended.
These self-paced certification courses orient faculty to APU's philosophy and approach to online and blended pedagogy. Specifically, these courses offer faculty technical training on the effective use of Canvas (APU's new learning management system) and pedagogical training including on how to integrate the Christian faith in blended and online courses.
It is recommended that faculty enroll and complete the relevant certification the semester prior to when they start teaching. Email email@example.com if you have any questions.
Credit for Sakai Orientation to Online Teaching
Faculty who have taken the Sakai version of Orientation to Online Teaching (Sakai OOT) can get some credit toward getting certified to teach online in Canvas (Canvas OOT). Canvas OOT consists of two parts: Part 1 (Using the LMS) and Part 2 (Online Pedagogy). Faculty who have completed Sakai OOT will only need to take Part 1 of Canvas OOT. (Faculty will need to note they have completed Sakai OOT on the registration form.)
Faculty with training and/or experience with Canvas will be happy to know that what is tracked in the Part 1 training is completion of assessments and not viewing of the training content per se. In other words, every module of the course provides an overview of a Canvas tool (e.g., Announcements, Assignments, etc.) and includes a three-item quiz. Faculty must get two out of three correct in order to pass the quiz. Completion of Part 1 requires the passing of all the quizzes.
