External Apps (LTI Tools)

External apps are an easy way to add new features and functionalities to a Canvas course. For example, APU's Canvas instance has pre-installed Google Apps, FlipGrid, YouTube, Khan Academy, and other tools that can enhance the student learning experience. External apps can be added to Modules, Course Navigation, the Rich Content Editor, and Assignments. The Edu App Center lists all tools that can be installed in Canvas.

While instructors can add external apps in their own courses, it is important to note that doing so incurs potential security and privacy risks. To safeguard against any potential issues, Information, Media, and Technology (IMT) and the Office of Innovative Teaching and Technology (ITT) want to partner with APU faculty and academic administrators interested in adding new external apps in Canvas by providing a thorough vetting process to do so.

Please use the form to the right to request approval of any new external apps/tools to be added to Canvas. Once a request has been submitted, IMT and ITT will communicate with the third party to address any security and privacy concerns. Once approved, the external app/tool will be added to the installed list. If you have any questions, please contact canvas@apu.edu.
